The San Siro stadium owes its name to the neighborhood it was built in. Since 1980 it has been named after Giuseppe Meazza, one of the greatest Italian footballers to have played both in Inter and Milan.

The project was born in 1925 at the behest of Milan’s president, Piero Pirelli. In just 13 months the building was completed and it was inaugurated on 19th September 1926 on the occasion of the Milan-Inter derby. The original structure is inspired by English stadiums, without an athletics track, and is made up of four straight grandstands.

The most important expansion works, which brought its capacity from the initial 35,000 spectators to the current 85,700, took place in 1935 and 1955, to then end in 1990, on the occasion of the World Cup.

San Siro is a true football Olympus: it hosts all the matches of Milan and Inter, it is currently the most capacious stadium in Italy and has been defined by the New York Times as the most fascinating in the world. San Siro is frequently a set for filming and, in the summer, it becomes an exciting setting to host the best concerts by national and international artists.
